How is reading fluency calculated? Reading fluency is calculated by students reading a grade-level passage for 1 minute. Take the total number of words read per minute and subtract the errors. If a student hesitates, skips over, or substitutes a word for more than 3 seconds, it is counted as an error. If a student auto corrects him/herself then you do not count it as an error. This will give you the correct words per minute.
